Johannes Heester, a Dutch-born performer who made his reputation in National Socialist Germany and continued to perform until recent times, died on Christmas Eve at a hospital in Starnberg, Germany, where he had been for several days.

Heesters was a tenor who made his stage debut at the age of 30 at the Volksoper in Vienna in 1934. The following year he moved to Germany with his wife and daughters, where he became a crowd favorite at the Komische Oper and Admiralspalast.

During the time of the Third Reich, he performed for Adolf Hitler. Joseph Goebbels put him on the Gottbegnadeten list (literally God-given or "Important Artist Military Exempt" list) as an artist considered crucial to National Socialist culture.

Because of this and because he visited the Dachau concentration camp in 1941 (Dachau was the first labor camp in NS Germany and seen as a model of good planning and progressive ideas in the early 30's), he was seen as an enemy or traitor to many Dutch. Heesters entertained Wehrmacht soldiers during the war, but insisted he did not entertain SS troops when at Dachau, of which he was accused.

 Why is Grandma Nisel not mentioned in Elie Wiesel’s Night?

According to Hilda Wiesel’s 1995 “Survivors of the Shoah” testimony, Grandmother Nisel (also  spelled Nissel) went with the family to Auschwitz.

According to Elie Wiesel’s 1995 memoir, All Rivers Run to the Sea1, Grandmother Nisel went with the family to Auschwitz.

But Grandma Nisel is not mentioned even once in Wiesel’s 1958-60 supposedly autobiographical Night.2

Did Wiesel simply forget about his grandmother only 10 years after the event and then remember her again in the 1990’s? Did he cut her out because he wanted to condense his book and she was peripheral to the storyline? Neither of these can be believed. In the first place, Wiesel makes it clear in All Rivers how important Grandma Nisel was to him and he writes affectionately about her. Secondly, by including his grandmother when he mentioned his mother and three sisters, he would not have added more than a few words to the deportation narrative, as we will see. Thirdly, Grandma Nisel, as a member of his family group that he says he lost at Auschwitz, could not be left out when writing about his family group.

The November 2011 annual remembrance march for the 1 million young German men who died in Eisenhower's Rhine meadow camps due to starvation and disease immediately following the end of hostilities, 1945.

This peaceful memorial march was not covered in any mainstream news media, nor recognized by the German government. This segment of the German population only have a voice through self-made videos such as this. The video is currently posted at Youtube here, where it might play better.

Jury decides that death is the answer.

On Friday, December 9, the jury deciding the fate of home-invasion rapist/murderer Joshua Komisarjevsky rejected mitigating circumstances presented to them by Defense Council and decided for death on all 6 counts.  This was hailed by the general public (as noted in immediate comments to newspaper stories1), while it was a disappointment to the state of Connecticut’s largest newspaper The Hartford Courant, some Connecticut lawmakers and Elie Wiesel.

Christopher K. was the only family member to attend the sentencing trial, during which time he made friends with the Hawke and Petit families.

On Oct. 26, 2010, Wiesel made a speech in Connecticut while the trial for Steven Hayes was in session, calling on the jury to not give the death penalty to either Hayes or Komisarjevsky for their brutal torture/killing spree. The discovery of human remains in a mass grave near the village of Dobronín in western Moravia in August 2010 led to the launch of a historical criminal investigation — and sparked an emotional and divisive national debate about reprisals against Sudeten Germans at the end of World War II in then-Czechoslovakia. Police now have the results of DNA tests on the remains of the 13 males between the age of 30 and 60 — allegedly the victims of a violent death — and samples from their potential descendents.  

Since the discovery, the mass grave outside Dobronín has become the subject of contentious speculation, with several versions of events circulating, but to date practically no bona fide evidence has emerged to substantiate them.

Former Sudeten-German residents of Dobronín and nearby villages have given accounts of a massacre of local ethnic Germans that took place on May 19, 1945, less than two weeks after the end of the war. The most detailed account has come from one Fritz Hawelky, who gave the names, and for the most part, the ages of 17 alleged victims, whom he said he knew personally. His list includes the names of boys aged 4, 5, 6 and 13, but according to the findings of the archeologists who excavated the mass grave, no remains of minors were found.

Why do we have a United States Holocaust Memorial Council, anyway?

This story may seem ”old news”  as I didn’t get around to posting it when I first saw it. The appointments by the White House took place on Oct. 29. It is still important news, though, as a way of explaining just what is the US Holocaust Memorial Council.  I did not know, and knowing what it is helps us to realize just how big an investment the U.S. Government has made in keeping “the Holocaust” alive and kicking in the minds of Americans and foreign visitors to Washington, DC. So here goes …

The United States Holocaust Memorial Council is the governing body of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Did you know that the USHMM, as it’s known, is a project of the U.S. Government? That’s important to know. The Council alone consists of 55 presidential appointees, in addition to ten Congressional representatives and three ex-officio members from the Departments of Education, Interior, and State.
